I could see why Asterie never considered this place a prisonâthe food alone might make me question ever leaving.
The tower prepared a dinner of roast chicken and potatoes so mouth-wateringly delicious I almost took thirds. It had been a long time since any meat but venison had touched my tongue.
âSo you will travel to Luz tomorrow then?â Amara asked Emmerick.
The boy nodded. âYes, Iâve sent word to the Queen to expect us. Sheâll send a carriage to the nearest road.â
Stiff conversation continuedâI watched Asterie push what little remained of her potatoes around her plate with a fork.
After dinner, Asterie led Emmerick and me to our separate bedchambers wordlessly. She seemed fatigued. She and Amara had not spoken much throughout dinnerâa tightrope seemed to be pulled between them, each waiting for the other to give. While they didnât seem uneasy with one another, it was as though the ground was being reshaped, and they were trying to understand their footingâdancing around topics of conversation.
I empathized with the exhausted feeling of too much information all at once, but I still lingered in the roomâs doorway. Hopeful.
âIâve kept something from you.â My words echoed heavily in that stone antechamber. âI had Van follow Lynx to the Wasteland borders. There is a rip in the wardsâ¦Amara believes Firose is raising an army from Wasteland defectors.â
Her eyes met mine with a hint of betrayal gleaming there. I should have told them sooner. Iâd had a dozen chances, but only when my dear friend confirmed my fears did I feel confident enough in my suspicion.
âGoodnight, Fen.â She turned away abruptly.
I grabbed her tunic sleeve gently, pulling her back to me. I should have clasped my hands behind my back to keep from reaching out to her. But, even after everything Iâd just promised my dear friend, I couldnât help it.
She turned back toward me willingly before melting into my arms as I embraced her.
âIâm sorry,â I whispered into her hair. âFor how I acted this morning, for all of it.â
When I moved to pull away, she held onto the back of my shirt. Her head was tilted just right, and I leaned in to let my lips brush hers.
It wasnât fair to play games with her, but I wasnât sure what game I was even playing anymore. Maybe the one where my heart gets roasted over a spit.
âSee you in the morning, my beauty.â I spoke the words between our mingled breath before placing the gentlest kiss on her lips and then stepping back out of her grip, unwinding my limbs from her.
She looked confused but offered me a tired smile before she backed away and turned to walk down the iron steps.
As I settled into bed, Amaraâs words returned to me. âShe would bring you to your knees.â
What would I give to see Asterie from that angle? In my imagination, I dropped to my knees before her, tasting her, making every muscle in her body tense before I brought her to release. I couldnât help wrapping a hand around myself at the thought.
